Title of Book: Talk of the Town By Lisa Wingate BACK COVER: Can anything go right in this tumbleweed town? Her show, American Megastar, is TV’s hottest program, but life couldn’t be worse for associate producer Mandalay Florentino. She’s just arrived in the hayseed town of Daily, Texas, to arrange a surprise “reunion concert” for hometown finalist Amber Anderson—only everyone seems to know the secret already. Plus, she keeps crossing paths with a gorgeous cowboy with blue eyes who may not be the country boy he appears to be. And the paparazzi are swarming. And her boss is demanding perfection…or else. With the faith and future of a young singer on the line, Mandalay and the town of Daily must find the courage—and the creativity—to make sure the reunion concert is unforgettable! REVIEWER’S COMMENTS: Daily, Texas, is a deadbeat town. No one comes here anymore. Most shops are closed up. The beauty shop and the café are the only life in the town, or so it seems. Perhaps the problem is that there’s been nothing to be lively about! Imagene Doll works at the café. If there is any news to be had, it’ll be heard at the café. But Imagene, a widow, really could care less about the gossip. With her beloved husband gone, she feels her life is over. Until “life” finds her! Enter Mandalay Florentino and Carter. Mandalay is supposed to be “under cover”, checking out the town for a surprise concert. Carter—well, no one seems quite sure what Carter is doing, but he sure charms his way into Daily with no problem! Mandalay is suspicious of Carter but intrigued by him too. His blue eyes and charm are terribly disarming! And it’s so hard to be undercover in a small town! Manda is supposed to be arranging a surprise concert for Amber Anderson, hometown girl. But with paparazzi swarming about, it’s difficult to do anything secretly. The entire town comes to life, banding together for the good of one of their own. Folks who have lived as neighbors begin to see that loving instead of criticizing is a balm to the soul, and that giving brings joy. Talk of the Town is one of the most enjoyable books I’ve read in a long time. Lisa Wingate is a gifted writer who has a way with words. Her characters are three dimensional people, very real in their struggles, their joys, their memories, their longings. I’m sure I could wander into the café in Daily today and find Imagene serving pecan pie and Bob flipping burgers on the grill. And I would find small town folk willing to help a friend in need. Wingate has written a beautiful story, mixing intrigue, romance, and humor. It’s a must-read! |
